Meeting the Construction Skills Challenge

As the South West’s Construction Technical Excellence College (CTEC) we are pioneering a new era of construction skills provision. In 2025 the government identified a skills gap in our construction workforce, highlighting the need for 40,000 additional skilled construction workers to build 1.5 million homes and support critical infrastructure projects.

In response to this the South West CTEC programme was launched, and Exeter College was selected as the CTEC for the South West region. The programme provides the college with £2m in revenue over 4 years, to invest back into knowledge-sharing on construction skills training, so we can widen the provision of cutting-edge education, rooted in employability and future progression.

Collaborating to Build a Stronger Construction Workforce

The South West CTEC programme is designed to connect education and industry, creating a shared approach to developing the skills the construction sector needs now and in the future. By working together, we can increase impact, share best practice and support a pipeline of skilled local talent.

Working with Economic Stakeholders Across the South West

The South West CTEC programme will bring together local government economic actors, to oil the wheels of the construction skills ecosystem. This covers a vast array of stakeholders including local governing authorities, training provider networks, membership organisations, LSIPs and the ERBs that represent them. By offering opportunities to map out the necessary steps to better the construction skills ecosystem, the South West CTEC programme helps to ensure clear alignment with regional and sub-regional need.
